Richard “Gene” Howrey, Sr., 78, of Greenfield, passed away Oct. 9, 2014, at his residence. He was born on March 27, 1936, in Maxwell, as the son of Milo and Mildred (Dobbins) Howrey.

He graduated from Maxwell High School in 1954 and served in the Army National Guard. Gene married Nancey Ann (Collins) Howrey on Aug. 2, 1958, in Maxwell.

Gene worked for Delco Remy in quality control for 30 years before retiring in 1986. He then worked as a bus driver for Greenfield Central School for 18 years until 2004. Gene attended Trinity Park United Methodist Church. He enjoyed spending time fly fishing, camping and hunting.

Gene is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Nancey; son, Richard “Dick” G. (Lori) Howrey, Jr. of Greenfield; daughter, Kathi (Bill) Vinson of Greenfield; sister, Martha Ann (Fred) Over of Greenfield; 4 grandchildren, Chris (Mellissa) Howrey, Cody Howrey, Kelsi (Arturo) Fresan and Joshua Sotus; and 2 great-grandchildren, Josie Howrey and Drew Lively.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and infant brother, Max Howrey.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 13, 2014, at Erlewein Mortuary & Crematory, 1484 W. US Hwy. 40, Greenfield, IN 46140.  A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2014, also at the mortuary. Reverend Mike Manning will be officiating. Burial will follow at Park Cemetery.
