Irene G. (Sandefur) Jester, 75, of Greenfield, passed away Tuesday, August 26, 2014 at Hancock Regional Hospital. She was born on April 16, 1939 in Shelby County as the daughter of Harley V. and Thelma F. (Thompson) Sandefur.
She graduated from Morristown High School in 1958. Irene graduated from St. Francis School of Nursing. She married Doyle G. Jester on Feb. 2, 1968, in Greenfield.
She worked for many years at Hancock Regional Hospital as a nurse. She also worked for Dr. Gary Sharp for 25 years. She was on the City Council from 2000-2004. Mrs. Jester was a member of the F.O.P. and St. Michael’s Catholic Church. She was past President of Greenfield Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and a former board member of the Kenneth Butler Memorial Soup Kitchen.
Irene is survived by her son, John (Ronda) Jester of Greenfield; daughter, Tammy Vangundy of Greenfield; five grandchildren, Joshua, Christa, Jordon, Mariah, and Jenna; and one great-grandchild, Jase Doyle.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Doyle G. Jester; parents, Harley V. and Thelma F. (Thompson) Sandefur; and brothers, Kenny Sandefur and John Edward Sandefur.
Visitation will be held from 4 until 8 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 28, 2014, at Erlewein Mortuary & Crematory, 1484 W. US Hwy. 40, Greenfield, IN 46140. A private burial will be held at Park Cemetery in Greenfield. Pastor Steve Bradley will be officiating.
