Gene P. Hamm, 75, of Cumberland, passed away Monday, June 16, 2014, at his residence. He was born on June 7, 1939, in Coeburn, Virginia, as the son of James S. and Fonda A. (Robinette) Hamm. He served in the Army from 1962 – 1964. He married Katherine (Delong) on June 20, 1981, in Indianapolis.

He previously had owned his own company, Hamm’s Heating and Air Conditioning. He had also worked for Indianapolis Housing Authority as a plumber and heating and air technician for 15 years and also for Chrysler as a machinist for 11 years. Mr. Hamm loved working on lawnmowers and listening to bluegrass music.

Gene is survived by his wife, Katherine (Delong) Hamm of Cumberland; children, Douglas Hamm of Anderson; Richard VanCleave of Indianapolis, Jackie VanCleave of Indianapolis, Carolyn Smith of Celina, Tenn., Sharon Noel of Greenfield, Diana (Phillip) Smith of Celina, Tenn., and Joyce VanCleave of Indianapolis; brothers, Richard Hamm of Tenn. and Cliff (Sue) Hamm of Greenfield; sisters, Margie Hamm of Oklahoma and Shirley Hamm of Arizona; 12 grandchildren and 14 great- grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James S. and Fonda A. (Robinette) Hamm and brother, Gilbert Hamm.

Visitation will be from 4 – 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 19, 2014, at Erlewein Mortuary & Crematory, 1484 W. US Hwy. 40, Greenfield, IN 46140. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 20, 2014, also at the mortuary. Reverend Loyce L. Webb will be officiating. Burial will follow at Park Cemetery in Greenfield with full military rites by the Greenfield Veterans Honor Guard.
