Carol Hoilman Landes, 89, of Greenfield, died May 23, 2014, in Greenfield. She was born Sept. 1, 1924, in Merom, Ind., the daughter of Rea and Reah Hoilman.

Married on Oct. 5, 1945, Carol and Jim Landes enjoyed a wonderful life together, of family, friends and community service. Carol attended Bluffton College, now Bluffton University in Ohio and during World War II, she worked alongside Jim in the state hospital in Ypsilanti, Mich. They returned to Bluffton, started a family and Jim completed his degree. The new family of four moved to Oxford, OH., and while Jim earned his advanced degree their third child was born. In 1951, they relocated to Tucson (with a 4-year old, a 3-year-old, and a 4-month-old), traveling there in an old school bus converted for the long trip, with everything they owned packed into it. After five years in their beloved adopted state of Arizona, they moved back home to Indiana. Carol continued rearing the children and was a constant volunteer for dozens of community organizations, was active in Bradley UMC, and the couple traveled widely for 35 years. Carol was a 46-year survivor of breast cancer and was a long time Reach-to-Recovery volunteer for the American Cancer Society. In addition to being an avid reader, a member of several book clubs and supporter of the library, she was a regular at the symphony, theater and opera. In her last 10 years, she was a devoted caregiver to Jim in his journey through Alzheimer’s.

She is survived by her husband, of 68 years, Jim; her children, Jim Landes of Fishers, Debby (Leonard) McKenzie of Atlanta, Reah (Jerry) Smolek of Indianapolis; four grandchildren and two great- granddaughters.

Her sister, Jean and brother,  Bernard preceded her in death.
