Mahalia Butler, 90, of Indianapolis, formerly of Greenfield, passed away Tuesday, May 20, 2014, at Green Tree at Post, Indianapolis. She was born March 19, 1924, in Edenton, N. C., to the late Charles and Cynthia (Ambrose) Twiddy.

Mahalia was a graduate of New Bern High School, N. C. She married Lemuel Butler on March 27, 1943. Mahalia was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker. She was also a 50 year member of the Eastern Star.

She is survived by sons, Richard Butler of Anderson, Jim Butler of Greenfield, Ralph Butler of Indianapolis; daughters, Carol Turner of Yorktown, Cindy (Larry) Gray of New Palestine and Jeanne Butler-Lennon of Greenfield; sisters, Camilla Driver and Lois Johnson both of N. C.; grandchildren, Marianne Larsen, Melissa Clauson, Melanie Turner, Chris Gray, Chad Gray, Jason Doyle, Nathan Butler, Jordane Trincado, Jakob Lennon, Janalynn Wood and 13 great- grandchildren.

Mahalia is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lemuel; daughter, Jane Butler; a brother and a sister.

Friends may call from 4- 8 p.m. Thursday, May 22, 2014, at Stillinger Family Funeral Home, Pasco Chapel, 1780 West Main Street, Greenfield, Indiana 46140. Services will be 1 p.m., Friday May 23, 2014, at the funeral home with Mark Wesler officiating. Burial will follow at Park Cemetery, Greenfield.
