Herbert A. Head, 88, of Fortville, passed away Monday, May 19, 2014, at his residence.  He was born on December 9, 1925 in Tilton, Ark. as the son of Clarence Head and Ora Letha (Shue) Jenkins.

He served in the Navy during World War II from 1944 -1946. He was present at the Battles of Iowajima and Okinawa.  He married Barbara J. (Webb) on April 1, 1948 in Pendleton, Ind. He worked for Colors Inc. as a foreman for 29 years. Most recently worked for Abrasive Products as a tumbling foreman for over 31 years before retiring in 2008.  Mr. Head was a lifetime member at the American Legion and VFW in Fortville. He was also a member of the Fortville Nazarene Church.  Herbert loved working and maintaining his clocks and telling jokes.

Herbert is survived by his children, Gary (Brenda) Head of Ingalls, James “Jimmy” Head of Fortville, Debra “Debi” Barnes of Ingalls, Rick “Ricky” (Lynn) Head of Greenfield, and Cheryl (Rick) Coleman of Fortville; brother, Stanley (Bonnie) Head of Pendleton; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Head of Elwood; brother-in-law, Burley Coffman of Fortville; 10 grandchildren, Michael T., Stacey, Gary L., Michael S., Christy, Casey, Summer, Erin, Cherrick, and Ricky; many great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by parents, Clarence Head and Ora Letha (Shue) Jenkins; stepfather, Rhodes Jenkins; wife, Barbara J. (Webb) Head; granddaughter, Brooke; brother, Jim Head; sister, Mildred Todaro; brother-in-law, Robert “Dick” Webb; and sister-in-law, Norma Coffman.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday, May 23, 2014, at Erlewein Mortuary & Crematory, 124 E. Staat Street, Fortville, IN 46040.  A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 24, 2014, also at the mortuary.  Burial will follow at Gravel Lawn in Fortville with Military Rites by the Fortville Veterans Honor Guard.
