Sylvia  "Colleen" Compton, 87,of Jonesboro, Ind., passed away Wednesday, May 14, 2014, in Zionsville Meadows, Zionsville. Born on Nov. 13, 1926, in Fairmount, Ind., to   Robert  S. Kirkpatrick and  Helen (Thomas) Kirkpatrick.

Colleen worked as an assistant to Dr. Arthur Goldthwaite after graduating from Fairmount High School. until shortly after her marriage. She and her husband farmed for many years in the Fairmount area. She canvassed the local community as a census worker during the sixties, enjoying her interactions with her neighbors. After her husband's death in 1969, Colleen worked for 14 years in the Fairmount Motor Vehicle Bureau and then, for 20 years, as the assistant to the Grant County Commissioners in Marion, Indiana from which she retired in Dec. 2004.

Over the years, Colleen was a great fan of the Madison-Grant Argylls, the Purdue Boilermakers, the Pacers and the Colts. Her most beloved job was always as wife, mother and grandmother, for which her family will be eternally grateful. They will greatly miss and cherish their memories of her strength, her kindness, her generosity, her innate morality and wisdom, which she shared unreservedly.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Leland Compton, her brother, Virgil Kirkpatrick and grandson, Kameron Flynn. Colleen and Leland were the parents of three daughters, Cheryl (Richard) McCracken, Longview, Texas, Charla Flynn, Carmel, Renee Reed, Zionsville; two sons, Doug Compton, Jonesboro, Ind. and Scott Compton , Greenfield. They were the grandparents of 11 grandchildren and 14  great- grandchildren with two on the way.

Arrangements are being handled by Armes-Hunt Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 415 S. Main St., Fairmount, IN. Funeral service will be at the Fairmount  Chapel  at 1 p.m. Saturday,  May 17, 2014, Dr. Thomas Jones officiating. Interment will be at Grant Memorial Park, Marion, Ind. Visitation is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 17, 2014, at the Fairmount Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph's Indian School, Chamberlain, SD  57326; Friends Meeting House, 1st and Mill Street, Fairmount, IN  46928 or Bethel Friends Church, 1491 W.  600 S., Jonesboro, IN  46938.
