Nelson Newhouse, 83, of New Palestine, passed away May 13, 2014, after a 17 year battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Nelson was born April 22, 1931, in New Castle, to Clarence & Gladys Newhouse.

He lived in Shelbyville, before coming to Rush County at the age of 15.  Nelson met his future wife, of 61 years, Esther Apple, when he came to Mays High School, and they graduated together in 1949. He attended Purdue University for one year before enlisting in the Air Force, in 1951, for a four year tour of duty during the Korean War. He spent one year at Misawa AFB in Japan, and six months in Korea. Nelson was awarded the Korean Service Medal and the United Nations Service Medal with the rank of Airman 1st Class while assigned to the 808th Motor Vehicle Squadron. The remainder of his enlistment was spent at Bergstrom Air Force Base in Austin, Texas. Upon his return from Korea, Nelson and Esther were married on Feb.  21, 1953.

Nelson and Esther are the parents of Rick Newhouse (Jill) of Indianapolis, Tamra Akinci (Jay) and Pamela Butcher (Anthony) both of New Palestine. They have five grandchildren, Kirby Hisel (Matt) of Versailles, Ky., Allison Giesting (Rob) of Crestwood, Ky., Lauren Reeves of Bargersville, Ind., Brendon Steele (Kathy) of Indianapolis, and Nicholas Butcher of New Palestine. They also have three great -grandchildren, Waylon Reeves of Bargersville, Ind., Eli Hisel of Versailles, Ky. and Georgia Giesting of Crestwood, Ky.

Nelson is survived by his wife Esther, and their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Nelson was predeceased by an infant brother, Kellis and both his parents.

A Celebration of Life and Military Rites will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 17, 2014. at Todd Funeral Center and Crematory in Rushville. Burial will follow at Center Church Cemetery in Mays, Ind. Friends may call at the funeral home from 11 a.m. to 1p.m.
