William James Powell, Devoted husband, father, and friend, was born Jan. 25, 1927, Milton, Ind., departed peacefully to his heavenly promise, March 31, 2014, in Bloomington.

William was a WWII veteran with the 187th Glider Infantry and the 11th Airborne Division, and a member of the Spencer VFW Post 1405. He loved his country and respected her liberty. He was employed in the insurance industry for 45+ years. His interests included wood working, leaving many mementos for his children and grandchildren which they will treasure, and reading. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in New Palestine for 31 years, and currently of Trinity Lutheran Church in Ellettsville for 10 years where he served as an elder. John 3:16

He is survived by his wife, of 63 ½ years, Doris Jean (Vest )Powell of Spencer; sons, William David Powell (Roberta) of Whidbey Island, Wash. and James Thomas Powell (Jan) of Gulfport, Miss.; daughters, Kathi Louise Parker (Jim) of Pinedale, Wyo., Kristi Marie Risk (David) of Spencer. His heritage currently includes 11 grandchildren, 11 great- grandchildren, four great -great- grandchildren, and three stepgrandchildren.

He was preceded in death by twin sons, Steven and Stephan Powell; parents, Harry and Naomi (Onstott) Powell; brother,, Charles Powell and Harry Powell Jr. and granddaughter, Rebekah Jean Parker.

Showing was held from 10 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 5, 2014, at West & Parrish & Pedigo Funeral Home in Spencer. Funeral followed at 12:30 p.m. Immediately following the service, William was transported to Zion Lutheran Church in New Palestine for a committal service at 3 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Benevolence Fund of Trinity Lutheran Church.
