Cassie L. Tolbert, 98, Greenfield, passed away on Sunday, March 9, 2014, at Springhurst Health Campus. She was born in Tazewell, Tenn., on Nov. 1, 1915, to Harvey Whitaker and Laura (Southern) Whitaker. She married Thomas Glenn Tolbert on March 22, 1941, in Morristown, Tenn. He died in Aug. 1991.

She’s a graduate of Claiborne County (TN) High School and attended Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tenn. Prior to her marriage, she taught in Riverside and Ferguson schools, one-room schools in Claiborne County, Tennessee. She and Glenn moved to LaPorte following his return from service in WWII. They lived in LaPorte until his retirement then moved back to Tazewell.  They moved to Greenfield in 1984.

Cassie loved cross-stitch, crosswords, and gardening.

She is survived by her daughters, Glenna Shelby (Jim) of Greenfield and Joy (Bill) of Indianapolis; grandsons, Billy and Ben; stepgrandchildren, Dugan (Marci) and Patrick (Bianca Tse) Shelby and Jennifer (John) Graham; great-stepgrandchildren, Ethan, Emerson, Kaylen, and Nicholas Shelby and Zachary Graham; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and her parents she was preceded in death by her brother, H. Paul Whitaker, and her sisters, Pansy Dolski and Madeline Hill.

Friends and family will share memories of Cassie from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 16, 2014, at Coffey Funeral Home in New Tazewell, Tenn. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery in New Tazewell, Tenn.
