Matthew Allan Patton, 40, has gone to be with our Lord on Sunday, Feb. 23, 2014. He died at home surrounded by his loving family. Matt was born in Bloomington, on Jan. 22, 1974.

He participated in youth baseball at the All-Star level, Boys & Girls Club basketball, Choir, and several other activities in the Ellettsville area. Matt was a member at St. Thomas Lutheran Church. He played Babe Ruth baseball and participated in Mini Warehouse Show Choir.  As a freshman at Edgewood High School he participated in Edgewood Music Warehouse, swim team and Babe Ruth All Stars. He transferred to BHSS where he played Babe Ruth and was a member of Sounds of South He had lead roles in Les Miserable, Grease and West Side Story.  He graduated in 1992.

Matt joined the Navy on August 19, 1992. He completed his basic training in Orlando where he also participated in the Naval Choir. He then served aboard the Forestall and the George Washington. While on the George Washington, Matt had the privilege of sailing with then current President Clinton for three days. Matt completed eight weeks training at NAS Miramar in the Top Gun program. From there Matt was stationed in the United Arab Emirates during the Gulf War serving with the F-14 Tomcat Squadron VF-143. Once Matt was stateside again, he was stationed in Virginia Beach at NAS Oceanna. He was honorably discharged from the Navy on Dec. 18, 1996, after earning several medals and commendations for his excellent service.

Matt is survived by his mother, Marti (Liebrandt) Doering and Jim Doering of Ellettsville, Ind.; his father, Michael Patton and Nancy Berg Chiddister Patton of Bloomington; his children, Alexandria  Drake-Patton and Noah  Drake-Patton of Bloomington; his twin brother, Mark Patton (Michele) of Ormond Beach, Fla.; his brothers, Mychal Doering (Sarah) of Ellettsville, Ind., Ryan Chiddister of Centerville, Ind.; his sister, Amy Brummet of Bloomington; his grandparents, Chuck and Marion Doering of West Allis, Wisc. and Elzora Brown of Brownstown, Ind.and a large extended family including many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Matt was preceded in death by maternal grandparents, Virgil and Martha Liebrandt; cousins, Kathleen Rowland and Aaron Spenneberg; and paternal grandfather, James N. Patton.

Visitation for Matt will be held from 3-8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 28, 2014, at St. Thomas Lutheran Church 3800 E. Third St in Bloomington, Ind. Funeral Services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday March 1, 2014 at St. Thomas Lutheran Church.

In lieu of flowers people may donate to the Matthew A Patton Family Trust or to IU Health Bloomington Hospice of Monroe County.

The Funeral Chapel of Powell and Deckard 3000 E. Third St. in Bloomington is handling arrangements.
