Irene S. Shireman, 93, passed away Friday morning, Dec. 20, 2013, at Golden Living Center, Greenfield. She was born June 20, 1920, in Greenfield, the daughter of Orin Dale and Cassie (Crane) Sweezy.

Irene was a 1938 graduate of Greenfield High School and attended Friedman Business School. She worked for the Lyric Theater in Indianapolis; and, during World War II, as a toll operator, service assistant and instructor at the Indiana Bell Telephone Company. She also worked at the International Headquarters of the International Typographical Union, for various attorneys, and served as the secretary for the James Whitcomb Riley Centennial in 1949.  For 24 years Irene worked for the city of Greenfield as a clerk and cashier; and served as secretary for the Greenfield Bicentennial Commission in 1976.   Before her retirement in 2005, she enthusiastically worked for eight years as a hostess at the James Whitcomb Riley Birthplace Home and Museum.

She was a member of Greenfield Christian Church, Psi Iota Xi Sorority, Clio Literary Club, Friends of the Greenfield Library, Riley Old Home Society, Indiana State and Hancock County Historical Societies, and was a 50-year member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

On May 22, 1948, Irene married Ernest R. Shireman, who preceded her in death  in 1970. She was also preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Albert and Leroy Sweezy, and three sisters, Merle Sweezy, Edna Roberts Sexson, and Ethel Wade.

She is survived by her three daughters, Cynthia (William) Mutryn, McLean, Virginia; Candace (Wendell Lilly) Shireman, Silver Spring, Maryland; and Camilla (Dennis) Peper, Greenfield.  Also, surviving are a brother, Charles Sweezy, Rushville; a sister, Mary Manship, Elwood; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be at the Greenfield Christian Church Annex from 4:00 to 8:00 pm on Monday, December 23rd. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 24th, at Greenfield Christian Church with Reverend Frank Everett officiating. Burial will follow at Elm Ridge Cemetery, Muncie, Indiana.
