Carl E. Purcell, 95, a lifelong resident of Hancock County, peacefully passed away from this life at his home surrounded by his family on Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2013. Carl was born on March 11, 1918, in Shelby County. He was the son of Clyde R. and Edith M. (Church) Purcell.

He married Florence “Flossie” A. (Houchin) Purcell on Nov. 2, 1941. They were together for 70 years. She preceded him in death on Dec. 9, 2011.

Carl was a partner in farming with his wife for 40 years. He worked for the State and Hancock County Highway Department, Morristown Elevator, East Side Screw Products in Greenfield and retired after 18 years. He was a member of the Shiloh Christian Church for 55 years and was very active in many aspects of the church. He spent time with his beloved lab dog, Duke.

Surviving him are his daughter, Carolyn (Richard) Matlock of Morristown, Kathryn (Van) Mitchell of Greenfield, Donna (Carroll) Reddick of Carthage, Diann (Randy) Huffman of Greenfield; grandchildren, Debbie Chrisman, Dan Matlock, Kristina (Stan) Wine, Kelly (Phil Kalbaugh) Blessinger, Michelle (Steve) Wheatley, Chad (Abby Truitt) Hollenbaugh, Tresha Reddick and Jennifer Huffman; great-grandchildren, Meggan (Danny) Eaton, Hanna (Daniel) Chew, Jessica Blessinger, Courtney and Patrick Wheatley, Abby, Emmerson, Carter Hollenbaugh and Laura Willard; great- great-grandchildren, Brandon and Jason Eaton; sister, Martha A. Marshall of Morristown; and brother, Max Purcell of Carthage.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Florence; parents; brothers, Kenneth, Verl, Gene, Bob, Vincent, Clyde Wray; sisters, Lorene Carley, Ruby McMichael; and son-in-laws, Bill Parker and Marvin Lawson.

A funeral service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 16  at Erlewein Mortuary & Crematory in Greenfield with visitation one prior to the service. Pastor Russel Jarvis and Pastor Fred Girdwood will be officiating. Burial will follow at Asbury Cemetery in Morristown.
