Joseph James Helton

Joseph James Helton,  88, of Greenfield, passed away Saturday, Oct. 12, 2013, at Kindred Transitional Care. He was born May 8, 1925, in Corbin, Ky.

He served in the 5th Infantry Division while serving in the Army. He married Edith (Richie) Helton on Aug. 2, 1945.

He worked for Universal Flavors as a Maintenance man in Indianapolis.  Once a year, Joseph met with the members of his Battalion. He was a member of Calvary Bible Methodist Church in Greenfield. In his spare time, he enjoyed music, writing songs, singing in church and playing guitar. Joseph was known for his sense of humor, loved entertaining and was very funny.

He is survived by his children, Ronnie (Ruth) Helton, Pat (Danny) Kinney, Gloria (Bob) Jenkins, Jim (Liz) Helton, Carolyn (Gary) Cole, Teresa (David) Potter, and Joe (Teresa) Helton; 17 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and two great great-grandchildren.

Joseph was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; his brother, Edwin; and sisters, Lorena, Elanora, Louise, and Adeena.

Visitation will be from 4 – 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2013, at Erlewein Mortuary & Crematory in Greenfield. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2013, also at the mortuary. Pastor Mike Mater will be officiating. Burial will follow at Park Cemetery in Greenfield.
