Joseph “Joe” C. Cole

Joseph “Joe” C. Cole, 88, of Greenfield, passed away Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013, at Kindred Transitional Care.  He was born on May 5, 1925, in Rushville, the son of Samuel L. Ellsworth and Margaret Lucille (Mefford) Cole.

He attended Westland High School and served in the Army as a Paratrooper. Joe was stationed with the 501st Infantry during WW II from 1943-1946, where he had several jumps into combat throughout Europe and Africa; he was awarded four Bronze Stars and the Purple Heart. Joe married Fannie Ann (Souder) Cole on December 11, 1981.

Joe worked for Delco Remy as a machinist for 30 years before retiring in 1981. He was a member of Apostolic Pentecostal Church of Greenfield, and a former member of the Arrowhead Golf Course. Joe was a joker who enjoyed aggravating his grandkids. When he was younger, he was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, and trap shooting.

He is survived by his wife, Fannie Cole of Greenfield; children, Barbara Egerton, Brenda Stugill, and Mary Beth (Jerry) Davis, all of Greenfield; stepchildren, Tony (Sherry) Amburgey of Knightstown, Roxanne (Robert) Hawkins of Greenfield, Cindi Krell of Greenfield, Janie (Jerry) Miles of New Palestine, Veda (Jim) Smith of Greenfield, and Donn (Mike) Miles of Greenfield; daughter-in-law, Cathy Cole of Greenfield; brother, Tom Cole of Maxwell; nine grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; six great great-grandchildren; ten stepgrandchildren; and numerous great-stepgrandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Margaret; first wife, Flora Fay (Pierce) Cole; infant daughter, Mildred Lynn Cole; son, Larry Cole; brothers, Bill, Lloyd, Elmer, and Dale Cole; and sisters, Annabell Randall, Edna Martin, Catherine Smith, Maxine Merchant, Betty Ferguson, Mary Walls, and Edith Cole.

Visitation will be from 3 – 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2013, at Erlewein Mortuary & Crematory in Greenfield. A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, 2013, also at the mortuary. Pastor Joseph Riggs will be officiating. Burial will follow at Park Cemetery in Greenfield.
