Joan L. Padgett Wanicki

Joan L. Padgett Wanicki, 84, of Franklin, Ind., passed away Friday, Oct. 4, 2013, on the Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi, at Johnson Memorial Hospital in Franklin. She was born Feb. 27, 1929, in Greensburg, Ind. to Gerald and Katherine (Tumilty) Suttles.

She was a graduate of Connersville High School and the St. Vincent School of Nursing. Joan began her nursing career with Dr. Will Dalton in Shelbyville in 1950. On May 6, 1950, she married John H. Padgett. He preceded her in death on January 3, 1984. In 1963 she and her family moved to Franklin. She joined the nursing staff at Johnson Memorial Hospital where the majority of her 22 year career was spent welcoming new babies into God’s world in the OB department. Following her retirement from JMH, Joan became the first Coordinator of the Johnson County WIC Program and retired (again) in 1993. She was a devoted member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Franklin, an Oblate of Our Lady of Grace Monastery in Beech Grove, and a Daughter of Isabella. On Sept. 14, 1986, Joan married Frank J. Wanicki, Jr. She and Frank thoroughly enjoyed sharing their love with their children, grandchildren and other members of their family. Frank passed away March 30, 2008.

Survivors include her children, Dr. John H. (Darlene) Padgett, Jr. of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Kathy (David) Mackey of Connersville, Ind., Jeff A. (Liz) Padgett of Springville, Ind., M. Susan (Bill) Ertel of Franklin, Janet P. (Mark) Alexander of Franklin, Tom J. (Michelle) Padgett of Franklin, Sharon Richards of Franklin, Cheryl Majewski of Franklin, Tony (Patty) Wanicki of Hobart, Ind., and Steve (Angela) Wanicki of Franklin; 26 grandchildren; and 36 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; and a daughter, Pam Good.

Reverend Father John Beitans will conduct a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, 2013, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, 114 Lancelot Drive in Franklin. The family will receive friends from 9 a.m. Thursday until service time at the church. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery in Franklin.

Swartz Family Community Mortuary and Memorial Center in Franklin is handling the arrangements.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to St. Rose of Lima Catholic School, 114 Lancelot Drive, Franklin, Indiana 46131.
