Carl E. Hawkins, 86, of Greenfield, passed away Friday, Sept. 20, 2013, at Harrison Terrace Nursing Home in Indianapolis. He was born on Sept. 9, 1927, in Fountaintown, as the son of Smith and Addie (Noe) Hawkins.

Carl was a 1945 graduate of Morristown High School. While in high school, he was a star basketball player. He attended Indiana Central and served in the Army from 1945-1947. Carl married the late Alice Hawkins and later married Avis (Apple) Morford-Hawkins on January 22, 2001, in Fountaintown.

Carl worked for GM as a supervisor for over 45 years before retiring in the early 1990’s. He was a member and Elder of the Gwynneville Christian Church; as well as a member of UAW, Woman’s Christian Temperance Union, Greenfield Lions Club, and the Morristown American Legion.

Carl is survived by his wife, Avis Morford-Hawkins of Greenfield; sons, Benjamin C. Hawkins of Greenfield and Matthew S. Hawkins of Plainfield; daughters, Crystal J. Hawkins-Gray of Greenfield, Lark L. Roberts of Southport, and Erin Kiewitt of Muskogee, Okla.; sister, Lavaughn Kelso of Fountaintown; eight grandchildren, David, Jacob, Stephanie, Joanna, Ross, Justin, Brooke, and Jennifer; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Alice Hawkins; brothers, Ray, Ralph and Harlan; and sister, Hamah.

Visitation will be from 1- 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2013, at Erlewein Mortuary & Crematory in Greenfield. A funeral service will follow at 2 p.m.  Brothers Kevin Powell and Russ Jarvis will be officiating. Burial will follow at Fountaintown Cemetery in Fountaintown, with full military rites.
