Virginia L. Sutton

Virginia L. Sutton, RN, 96, died on Sept. 16, 2013, at Lewis Memorial Christian Village in Springfield, Ill. She was born in Bridgeport, Conn., the middle child of Ray and Mable Van Stone.

Virginia graduated from high school at 16 and after one year of college, she attended and graduated from nursing school in the mid thirties. Virginia married William B. Sutton on June 23, 1938. Following their marriage, they lived in Indiana, Illinois and Iowa. They moved to Greenfield in the early 50’s where Bill worked as a researcher for Eli Lilly until his death in 1964. Virginia was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and Tri-Kappa. She then worked for Dr. Ted Kirby M.D. until her retirement in 1981, at which time she moved to St. Petersburg, Fla. In her retirement, Virginia was the first president of a resident owned corporation that negotiated the purchase of a mobile home park. Later she moved to Springfield, Ill. to be near family.

Throughout her life, she had a variety of interests including weaving, knitting, silversmithing, needlepoint, bridge, crossword puzzles, reading, classical music, architecture, education, travel and antique collecting. She was a good cook but always claimed her sister Jeanette was a better cook. Her proudest accomplishment was the educational and professional achievements of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchild.

She is survived by her two daughters, Amy L. (Al) Kellerstrass and Ann (William) Burke; her son, John (Kathy) Sutton; grandchildren, Katherine Kellerstrass, Peter Kellerstrass, Amanda Sutton, Elizabeth Sutton, Jessica Burke and Matthew Burke; and one great-grandchild, Jordan Kellerstrass.

Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. William B. Sutton Ph.D.; a brother; a sister; and her son-in-law, Albert L. Kellerstrass.

Virginia will be greatly missed by her family.

A memorial service will be held in Greenfield in early summer 2014. Donations can be made to the charity of your choice.
