Joyce Sue (White) Summers

Joyce Sue (White) Summers, 80, of Greenfield, passed away Sunday, August 11, 2013, at Springhurst Health Campus in Greenfield. She was born Aug. 4, 1933, in Switz City, Ind. as the daughter of Vern and Mary Fern (Haskett) White.

She graduated from Bloomfield High School in 1951, and married Forest Dale Summers on December 30, 1951. Joyce worked for Indiana Bell as a secretary for many years and as a library aide for Harris Elementary School. She spent much of her life as a dedicated homemaker. She was a member of Greenfield Christian Church for 40 years and a former member of Tri Kappa. Joyce enjoyed cooking and was especially known for her wonderful homemade pies. She loved reading, playing Bunko with friends, and planning family gatherings. She was a kind and gentle soul who was loved by everyone who knew her. Above all, she was an extraordinary wife, mother, and grandmother.

Surviving Joyce are her son, Dr. Michael (Sheila) Summers of Greenfield; daughters, Cindi Shultz, Susie Levering, and Sandy (John) Dinkens, all of Greenfield; ten grandchildren, Craig, Curt, Sarah, Kate, Sam, Meg, Rachel, Mary, Abby, and Allie; six great-grandchildren, Emily, Ethan, Esai, Gavin, Brylee, and Arthur; brother, Ronald (Jeanette) White of Bloomington; sisters, Nila (Joe) Hasler of Paris, Ill., Mary Ann Wilcoxon of Bloomfield, and Claudia (Gordon) Grounds of Lyons, Ind.; and brother-in-law, Robert Rodocker of Greenfield.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Forest Summers; parents, Vern and Mary Fern White; and brothers, Jim White and Earl “Nit” White.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, August 14, 2013, at Erlewein Mortuary & Crematory in Greenfield. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, August 15, 2013, at Greenfield Christian Church. Pastor Frank Everett will be officiating. Local pianist, Brad Herndon, will be playing the piano during the service. Burial will follow at Park Cemetery in Greenfield.

The Summers’ family would like to thank Springhurst Health Campus, Hancock Regional Hospital, Hancock Regional Home and Hospice, and all the home caregivers for giving their mother such excellent and loving care.
