Judy Gettinger Terrell

Judy Gettinger Terrell, 86, Fortville, passed away Sunday, April 28, 2013, surrounded in love by her family. She was born Jan. 8, 1927, in Sullivan County, Indiana, to Dan O. and Leone (Donaldson) Gettinger.

She loved life on the family farm and the lasting friendships made at Graysville High School. She attended Indiana University and finished her education at Indiana State University, earning a degree in education. Judy devoted much of her life to mentoring, teaching and coaching thousands of youth throughout Indiana. In her 40 years of teaching, she especially enjoyed her years and students at Charlottesville High School, Eastern Hancock High School, and IPS  Schools 51, 78 and 28. Judy was also a visionary and community advocate who, in the 1960’s, began the summer Fortville Parks Program, and initiated the softball program for girls and women. She led programs well into the 1980s and supported alumni throughout their lives. She never willingly missed a game! She was very active in the Fortville chapter of BPW, and a member of Greenfield Christian Church.

She is survived by her beloved family of whom she was so proud and supportive. Her five children, Mary (Vic) Holley; Steve (Patricia) Terrell; David (Elizabeth) Terrell;  Barb (Bill) Balbach; and Becky (Ross) Holbert; 15 grandchildren, Libby (Mike) Manship, Tim (Lindsay) Miller, Mindy (Bill) Ferguson, Meredith (Chris) Heitz, Todd Miller, Jessie (Michael) Smith, Jake Balbach, Daniel Terrell, Matt Terrell, Abby Balbach, Sam Balbach, Erin Holbert, Ellie Balbach, Lexi Holbert, and Andy Holbert; great-grandchildren,  Dylan Miller, Eli Manship, Jackson Miller, Luke Manship, Hank Ferguson, Tate Miller, Harlan Heitz, and Paul Smith; honorary daughter and friend, Catharine Schaidle; and sister, Mary Lou Hartzler.

Judy was preceded in death by her husband, Paul T. Terrell; daughter, Nancy Terrell Miller; sister Martha Jane Black; and brother John Gettinger.

Friends may call from 4 – 8 p.m., Wednesday, May 1, 2013 at Seals Funeral Home in Fortville. Services will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday, May 2, 2013, at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Gravel Lawn Cemetery, Fortville.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Hancock County Community Foundation Nancy Terrell Miller Scholarship Fund, or the charity of the donor’s choice.
