Anna L. Papageorge

Anna L. Papageorge, age 90, of Greenfield, passed away Tuesday, March 26, 2013 at St. Vincent Heart Center, Indianapolis. She was born July 14, 1922 in Greenfield, to the late John P. and Ruby (Knox) Butler.

Anna loved her husband, James, her seven children, seventeen grandchildren, and nineteen great grandchildren.  Anna grew up in the Great Depression in Greenfield, Indiana, the daughter of a baker and housewife.  She married Roy Marvin Mayberry, Sr. and was a mother to three sons and three daughters.  She worked as a waitress in their hometowns of Evansville, Indiana and Phoenix, Arizona.  Anna returned to Greenfield in 1966 and later married James Papageorge and was a mother to one more son.  Anna and James worked side-by-side in the restaurant business for 36 years until her retirement.  They owned restaurants in Indianapolis and the Chicago suburbs, where she lived from 1976-1994.  Anna and James returned to Greenfield in 1994, and she spent the remaining years near many of her children and grandchildren.  Anna had fond memories of growing up in Greenfield and would often share vivid details of her father’s Model-T, riding the interurban, family holidays, and sadly, soup lines during the Depression.  Anna’s favorite holiday was Christmas. She cherished her Christmas tree and proudly displayed her ornament collection from all over the United States.  Anna loved to cook and even mastered dishes from James’ native land, Greece.  Anna loved life, loved her family, and was proud of her Catholic faith. Anna Papageorge was a good wife, a good mother, and a good woman.

Anna is survived by her loving spouse, James P. Papageorge of Greenfield; brother, Robert Butler; sons, Donald (Barbara) Mayberry Sr. of Phoenix, Az., Fred (Diana Janot) Mayberry of Maxwell, John (Sandra) Papageorge of Indianapolis; daughters, Meryl (Ed) Roeger of Greenfield, Cheryl (Gene) Byers of Greenfield, Misty (Paul) Linne of Canyon County, CA sixteen grandchildren, and nineteen great grandchildren.
