Robert J. "Bob" Slayton
Robert J. "Bob" Slayton, 66, of Christopher, Ill., passed away at 1:10 a.m. Monday, March 18, 2013, at the VA Medical Center in Marion, Ill. He was born in Evansville on August 9,1946, the son of Freeman William & Viola Rita (Stricker) Slayton.
Bob served in the Navy for 6 years, from 1963-1969. He was a lifetime member of the Zeigler Eagles & Benton Eagles.
Mr. Slayton is survived by his son, Matthew (Amy) Moore of Nashville, Tenn.; 2 sisters, Patricia Kash of Christopher and Laura (Michael) Young of Benton, Ill.; brother, John Slayton of Morristown, Ind.; nephew John (Deserae) Mohr of Benton; 2 nieces, Amy (Donnie, Jr.) Shelton of Herrin, and Shelby Lynn McCoy of Benton; 4 great-nieces; 2 great-nephews; and sister-in-law, Rita Slayton of Peoria, Ariz.
Mr. Slayton was preceded in death by his parents; by 2 brothers, Freeman William "Bill" Slayton Jr. & Donald R. Slayton; and nephew, Donnie Ray Slayton.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Thursday, March 21, 2013, at Morton & Johnston Funeral Home in Benton, Ill., with funeral services immediately following at 1:00 p.m., with Father Joseph Trapp officiating. Burial with Military Rites by the Benton American Legion & VFW Posts will be in the Masonic & Oddfellows Cemetery in Benton.
