Mary Etta (Dunn) Comstock, 89, a long time resident of Greenfield, passed away with her family by her side on Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013, at Golden Living Center. She was born Feb. 10, 1923, in Cordova, N.C. to the late Henry Merritt and Mary Lee (Brigman) Dunn.

Mary met her husband, John C. Comstock, Jr., when he was stationed at Fort Bragg, N.C. and they were married on Christmas Day, 1943. During World War II Mary worked in the cotton mills in Gastonia, N.C. until her husband returned in 1946 when she moved to his native Greenfield to begin their lives together in earnest. Mary  worked for Indiana Bell as a telephone operator in the days when they were needed to complete calls.  She loved this job and her co-workers with whom she met for many years after, to recall good times. Mary became a housewife with the birth of her first child and enjoyed the role of mother and grandmother the remainder of her life. She was a member of Trinity Park United Methodist Church and a past member of Miriam Chapter #64 OES.

She is survived by her son, John C. Comstock III of Indianapolis; daughters, Linda (Brian) Comstock-Teel of Nashville, Ind. and Lisa (Tim) Bowling of Greenfield; sister, Frances Furr of Gastonia, N.C.; 5 grandchildren, Rick Petersen, Kim  Kaler, Adam Brizendine, Ashley Brizendine and Colleen Comstock; and 6 great-grandchildren.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John, in 2002; and brothers, Curtis, Gilbert, James, Vius, and Pete Dunn.

Visitation will be from 2-6 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 13, 2013, at Stillinger Family Funeral Home- Pasco Chapel of Greenfield. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 14, 2013, at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Park Cemetery.
