Jack L. Smith, 73, of Richmond, died Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013, at Reid Hospital. He was born Jan. 6, 1939, in Terre Haute, Ind., to Charles and Helen Virginia Copeland Smith.

He lived in Richmond for the past nine years. Jack earned a bachelor’s degree from Rose Hulman and a master’s degree from Purdue University. He was a quality control engineer at Western Electric and Alcatel Lucent for 35 years until his retirement in 1995. Jack then worked as a consultant for two companies until his retirement several years ago.

Survivors include his wife, Judith Kirkham Smith, to whom he married July 19, 1958; children, Cristinia Carolyn Matlock and Douglas Jack (Denise) Smith, both of Greenfield, and Cristopher Michael (Missy) Smith of Grove City, Ohio; grandchildren, Brittany Smith, Evan Matlock, Kristin Smith, Christian Smith, and Peyton Smith; great-grandson, Dillon Smith; sister, Phyllis Jean Smith; brother, Richard Charles Smith; nieces; nephews; and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family.
