Opal L. (Allee) Hughes, 88, of Knightstown, passed away Tuesday, June 19, 2012, at St. Vincent Hospital, in Indianapolis. She was born May 18, 1924, in Jennings County, Ind., to the late John Selah & Bertha (Barnes) Allee.

She graduated from Zena High School in 1941 and married Fred Hughes August 2, 1941.

Opal was a lifelong homemaker and faithful member of the Knightstown First Wesleyan Church since 1948, where she served in various capacities and with all ages, including church treasurer for 24 years, and an active member of the Wesleyan Women. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution serving as Regent for four years, and a member of the Knightstown Women’s Christian Temperance Union serving as president for 9 years. She served as secretary of the UAW Local 371 retirees for 9 years and was also a member of the Huguenot Society of Indiana. She loved to play the piano and organ and was the family historian, researching and writing several books on the Family History.

She is survived by a daughter, Judie (Raymond) Wells of Greenfield; one sister, Melba (Jack) Fish of Anderson; daughter-in-law, Ira (Griffin) Hughes of Greenfield; grandchildren, Chris (Lisa) Wells of Ft. Wayne, Cindy (Wells) Miller of Anderson, Dan (Loretta) Wells of Shirley, Kim Wells (Neville) Gerard of Greenfield, Greg (Mitzi) Hughes of Greenfield, Lisa Hughes (Jeff) Pullen of Richmond, Va.; 9 great grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Hughes; a son, Gerald Hughes.

Services will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, June 23, 2012, at First Wesleyan Church in Knightstown with Reverend Gail Whitmire officiating. Friends may call from 9 a.m. until time of service. Burial will follow in Glen Cove Cemetery.
