John W. Abel, age 83, of Greenfield, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2011. Born on Jan. 19, 1928, in Bedford, Ind., he was the son of Joseph S. and Mary I. (Dunn) Abel. John married Beverly M. May on June 19, 1954, in Indianapolis. He worked as a welding technician and retired from Union Carbide Corporation in Speedway, Indiana.

 John was a member of the Knights of Columbus St. Joseph Council and St. Michael’s Catholic Church. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing, and playing cards. Additionally, he was a veteran of the United States Navy who had served in WWII.

 Surviving him are his wife, Beverly M. May Abel of Greenfield; children, Pamela A. (William L.) Hutchinson of Mishawaka, Ind., Joseph H. (Rose L.) Abel of New Palestine, Brian K. Abel of New Palestine, and Steven J. (Diana M.) Abel of New Palestine; grandchildren, Cody, Corey, Chad, Tiffany, Lindsey, Heather, Adam, and Nick; and three great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents; and brother, Joseph Abel.

Visitation will be held on Friday, Nov. 18, 2011, from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Erlewein Mortuary in Greenfield. Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Saturday, Nov. 19, 2011, at 11:30 a.m. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Greenfield, with visitation taking place from 11 a.m. until the time of the service. Entombment will full military rites will take place at Calvary Cemetery in Indianapolis.
