Rick A. Hammer, age 59 years, of Hudson, Ind., and a former resident of Shirley, Ind., passed away on Thursday, Oct. 20, 2011, in Fort Wayne. He was born on Aug. 26, 1952, in New Castle, Ind., the son of Chester and Joann (Smith) Hammer.
He was a school teacher for Prairie Heights School System for 35 years starting in 1975. He retired after the 2010-2011 school year. He worked recently as a part-time teacher at Ivy Tech in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He attended the Angola Seventh Day Adventist Church, in Angola, Ind. He was very active in the Prairie Heights Athletic Department where he coached Basketball, Baseball, Football and Track.
Survivors are his mother, Joann (Smith) Hammer of Shirley; a son, Rick A. Hammer of Plainfield, Ill; daughters, Laura (Derek) Swanson of St. Petersburg, Fla., Lindsay (Daniel) Dale of Ashley, Ind.; Brothers, Richard (Holly) Hammer of Indianapolis, Ind., Jeff (Jeannette) Hammer of Indianapolis, Ind.; sisters, Teresa (Wendell) Hester of Shirley; Kathy (John) Hancock of Greenwood and Karen (Brian) Jeffries of Greenfield.
He was preceded in death by his father, Chester Hammer, in 2005.
Friends may call from11 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 27, 2011, at Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson. Funeral services will begin at 2 p.m. with Fred Girdwood, Minister of the Shiloh Christian Church Officiating. Burial will follow in the McCray Cemetery in Wilkinson.
