Ellsworth C. “Mac” McCleerey, 87, a resident of Greenfield, passed away Sunday, June 5, 2011 at Springhurst Health Campus in Greenfield.

He was born July 30, 1923 in Johnson County, Ind. to the late Elmer and Clara (Wieneke) McCleerey.

Mac graduated from Arsenal Technical High School, Indianapolis in 1941, Franklin College in 1949 with a B.A. degree and went on to Indiana University in 1954 to receive his M.S. degree. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII; was both teacher and coach in Filmore, Ind. (1949-1953) and Charlottesville, Ind. (1953-1959). He served as principal at McCordsville (1959-1963) and Mt. Vernon (1963-1988) schools; he was owner of McCleerey Sporting Goods of Greenfield (1971- present). Mac was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Greenfield Kiwanis Club, Lamba Chi Alpha Fraternity, Greater Greenfield Chamber of Commerce, Indianapolis Raquet Club, was a founding board member of Greenfield Revitalization and was a charter member of Greenfield Toastmasters.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Betty (Robb) McCleerey; son, Steve McCleerey of Greenfield; daughter, Ann (Daniel) Lewis of St. Petersburg, Fla.; grandchildren, Dianna Lewis, Andrew Lewis; several nieces and nephews.

Mac was preceded in death by sisters, Clarice Cooper, Cecil McCleerey; brothers, Earl McCleerey, Ernest McCleerey, Everett McCleerey, Edgar McCleerey and Emmett McCleerey.

Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 11, 2011 at the First Presbyterian Church of Greenfield with Rev. John Paulson officiating. Burial will follow at Park Cemetery in Greenfield. Friends may call from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, June 10, 2011 at Stillinger Family Funeral Home, Pasco Chapel of Greenfield.
