George H. Shafer, 81, of Carthage, died Saturday, April 2, 2011 at Flat Rock River Lodge in Rushville following an extended illness. He was born March 11, 1930 in Indianapolis, a son of the late Clarence L. and Mattie M. (Buckheister) Shafer.

He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 60 years, Shirley A. (Ferguson) Shafer of Carthage; three daughters, Pamela (husband, Ronald) Helms of Pimento, Peggy (husband, Wade) Beatty of Knightstown, and Penny (husband, Darrell) Weidner of Carthage; a granddaughter; three brothers, Jerry (wife, Kathy) Shafer of St. Louis, Mo., Eddie (wife, Pauletta) Shafer of Clarkesville, Tenn., Tony Shafer of Atlanta, Ga.; a sister-in-law, Maxine Shafer of Indianapolis; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, Adam Beatty and two brothers, John Shafer and Michael Shafer.

Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 5, 2011 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service Knightstown Chapel with Tim Basford officiating. Burial will follow in Glen Cove Cemetery. Friends may call from 12-2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home prior to the service.
