Dr. Norris Virl “Doc” Owen, 77, of rural Bloomfield, passed away at 6:15 a.m., Friday, March 11, 2011 at his residence. He was born Dec. 30, 1933, in Captown, NM, to Christopher Columbus & Elora Mae (Herriage) Owen.

Dr. Owen was a Veterinary Pathologist. He worked for Eli Lilly & Company, from 1965 to 1995, doing pharmaceutical scientific research. He was a graduate of New Mexico State with a Bachelor in Agriculture, and he graduated from Colorado State with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and Ph.D in Pathology and Virology. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War. Doc was a member of Tulip Church of God, Worthington American Legion, American & International Academy of Pathology, Teratology Society, Alpha Gamma Roe Fraternity, and Civil War Roundtable.

He is survived by his wife, Helen Alice (Williams) Owen, whom he married, May 21, 1955 in Phoenix, Ariz.; three children, Anita Owen, Indianapolis; Keith (Cathy) Owen, Evansville; Steve (Donna) Owen, Greenfield; 5 grandchildren, Courtney, Isaiah, Caitlin, Carissa & Sean Owen; brother, Bryan Owen, Oregon.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers and three sisters.

A funeral service will be held at 5 p.m. on Thursday, March 17, 2011, at Welch & Cornett Funeral Home, 23 S. Jefferson St., Worthington with Bro. Jeff Rocky, officiating. Friends may call at Welch & Cornett after 2 p.m., on Thursday until time of service.

Private family burial will be in the Owen Cemetery, on the family farm.

Memorials may be given to American Legion Post #106, Building Fund or Tulip Church of God in lieu of flowers.
