Mary E. Johnson, age 92, of Knightstown, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, March 8, 2011, at the Indiana Heart Hospital in Indianapolis. She was born on March 9, 1918 in Cadiz, a daughter of the late Russell and Rebecca (Kendall) Scarff.

A 1936 graduate of Cadiz High School, she retired from Guide Lamp in Anderson in 1980 after 29 years of service. She was the first woman fork-lift operator at Guide Lamp. A member of the Knightstown Friends Meeting, she loved to travel, play euchre, and very much enjoyed her lovely yard and flowers. She also loved spending time with her family and friends and was known for her wonderful smile and her humorous joke telling.

She leaves to cherish her memory; two sons, Mike Johnson of Knightstown and Rusty (Debbie) Johnson of Knightstown; seven grandchildren, Beth (Shane) Jones of S.C., Linda (Ed) Hughett of Knightstown, Brenda Mitchell of Knightstown, Jon Johnson of Knightstown, Steve Johnson of Indianapolis, Amanda Johnson of Irvine, Calif. and Hilary Johnson of Indianapolis; thirteen great grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter; one niece and one nephew.

She was preceded in death by her husband of over 51 years, Eugene Johnson in 1989; Lohm and Henry Garner, who raised her; two brothers, Clifford and Everett Scarff; a sister, Harriett Johnson; a niece, Mary Jean Ware; and a great grandson in infancy.

Mary’s family would like you to join them in celebrating her life at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 12, 2011, at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service Knightstown Chapel. Burial will follow in Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown. Friends may call from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Friday, March 11, 2011, at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Knightstown Friends Meeting with envelopes available at the funeral home.
