William Joseph “Bill” Summers, age 69, passed away on Wednesday, March 2, 2011, at his home in Greenfield. He was born on Sept. 9,1941, in Norfolk, Va., the son of John and Genevieve Summers.

Bill served in the U.S. Army, stationed in Fort Bliss, Texas. Afterwards, Bill was a police officer for the Norfolk, Va., Police Department and the Arlington, Va., Police Department. After his retirement from the police departments, Bill moved to Greenfield, where he worked at Kroger Supermarket. He loved country music, traveling, having visited all 48 lower states, and telling stories. He was a member of Trinity Park United Methodist Church of Greenfield.

Bill is survived by his wife, Joy Cole Summers; his sons, Michael Noah, William (Lesley) Summers, Michael (Zoie) Cole; his daughters, Kelly (Tony) Alexis, Karen Cole, Amanda Cole; his brother, Bernard Summers; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, John, James, George, and Lee Summers; and sisters, Mary Smith, Virginia “Ginny” Blackburn, and Myrtle Rivenbark.

Friends and family may call from 9 a.m. until the start of the funeral service which will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, March 7, 2011, at Trinity Park United Methodist Church, Greenfield, with Rev. Mike Manning officiating. Burial with military rites will follow at 2 p.m. at Marion National Cemetery, Marion, IN.
